Trá
A long trek across some fields, darting in between curious cows and grumpy bulls, and this is your reward. These are the places where we find total tranquility and peace.
Trá is the Irish word for beach. Growing up, signposts for beaches often just read ‘Trá’ and nothing else. It was up to our parents to tell us the names and, often, the stories behind them.
Just like The Poisoned Glen, Murder Hole beach has a name that does little to describe the beauty of it. Found at Melmore head, not far from Downings, it’s arguably the most beautiful beach in an area brimming with beautiful beaches.
Why is it called Murder Hole beach? Like a lot of Donegal place names, there are fantastical stories and rumours, any one of which could be true. Was it because of the murder of a mythical king? Was it because of the dangerous currents? Or maybe because of its use by smugglers… We have no idea which story is true, but with a pint of Guinness in hand, they are all worth listening to.
