Looking down on the Silent Valley from the lower reaches of Slieve Binnian on a crisp December day.
Like so many places in Ireland, it’s not certain how the Silent Valley got its name. One theory is that the damming of the reservoir and construction work drove away all the birds, leaving the valley eerily silent.
I prefer to see the quiet of the valley as a joy. It’s truly peaceful to sit among the heather and just let the soundlessness wash over you.
